MEND stands for Mind, Exercise, Nutrition...Do it!

MEND is a community, family-based programme for overweight and obese children between 7-13 and their families. The programme places equal emphasis on each of its 4 elements;
Mind, Exercise, Nutrition...Do It.

It combines all the elements known to be important in treating and preventing overweight or obesity in children, including family involvement, practical education in nutrition, increasing physical activity and behaviour change. By following the MEND principles, participants will lose weight naturally, build their confidence and self-esteem and thereby build a foundation for healthy living - for life.

MEND is due to start at Kingsmead Leisure Centre, Canterbury on the 9th January 2008 and at Whitstable Sports Centre on the 7th January 2008. If you would like to be part of this exciting programme then you need to register your interest as soon as possible as only 15 lucky families will be able to take part.

If you do miss these programmes, don't worry, as there will be another 3 MEND programmes starting in April. These programmes will be based in Canterbury, Whitstable & Herne Bay, so why not put your name down now to ensure that you don't miss out. Active Life's partnership with MEND will ensure that these fun and exciting programmes will continue to run throughout each year until at least 2010.

What's involved?

The good news is that participants will not have to pay any money for the programme as it is being funded by The Big Lottery Fund, however, it will cost them their time and commitment. The programme lasts for 9 weeks and each child and a parent or guardian has to attend two sessions per week. Each session consists of a family based educational lesson on nutrition and behaviour change, followed by an activity session for the children whilst the adults are able to have an informal discussion over a cup of tea. Every child receives a free goody pack and an information folder to help them make those lifestyle changes and to keep them on track.
