Swim. Cycle. Run.
Give it a Tri. If you are looking for a new challenge, something to train for or simply wish to try a multidiscipline event then you have come to the right place. From April to August, we will be running 6 Go Tri beginners Triathlon sessions. Or if you wish to jump straight in there are a couple of local triathlon events we run along with all year round training inside the centres. There is also the Active Life Triathlon club which has an open membership and a great place to share training tips and join others at events.
GO TRI is an initiative launched by Triathlon England to provide people with the opportunity to take part in multisport event regularly and at a minimal cost. The events are short (200m pool swim, 6km cycle and 2km run), easy to access and repeated so that individuals can see progress if they wish to do it again.
We are running 6 events in 2017, starting in April and roughly once a month until August. The dates can be found on the Timetable below.
The entry fee for each event is £9.00, or £6.00 if you are an Active Life member. The events are low key, therefore no finish gantry, goody bags etc. Participants will be timed using a timing band which is included in the price.
The events will start at either Kingsmead Leisure Centre, Whitstable Swimming Pool or Herons Leisure Centre. All swimming is pool based and supported by Triathlon coaches and lifeguards.
Who are the events for?
GO TRI events are for people to discover the sport and try it out. It will give you the achievement of completing a multisport event in a safe and reassuring environment. They are open to anyone over the age of 14 and who are new or have never done anything to do with Triathlons or Aquathlons before. If you have competed in a Triathlon before, these events are not suited to racing, with the bike routes only really suited to beginners.
If you are looking to gear up for one of the GO TRI events or you are training for a bigger event, there is something on offer for you. There are regular weekly Triathlon specific swimming training sessions at the pools at Herons Leisure Centre and Whitstable Swimming Pool run in house by qualified coaches.
- Saturday 11.30am-12.30pm (Herons Leisure Centre)
- Sunday 9.15am-10.15am (Herons Leisure Centre)
- Tuesday 8.45pm – 9.30pm (Whitstable Swimming Pool)
In addition, Active Life Leisure Centres have group cycle classes, plenty of lane swimming, swimfit for extra instruction and a running club at Herons starting at 6pm every Monday.
If you are not yet a confident swimmer or need to work on your stamina or technique, there are various adult swim lessons available from all 3 centres. Please visit the Active Life Swim Academy page for more information.

Active Life Tri Club
The Active Life Triathlon Club is located at Herons Leisure Centre in Herne Bay. The club are a group of approximately 160 members that train both independently and together across the Canterbury District. Many members compete under the Active Life Triathlon club banner in Kent and Regional competitions but it’s mainly having others within to train with that motivates most of the members.
To see what’s current with the club, why not take a look at the Active Life Triathlon Club Facebook group or the page which includes a calendar of training that members do in and outside of the centres.

Splash 'n' Stagger
The Splash and Stagger is a unique and well established annual event consisting of a 3 mile run/stagger then a 400 metres swim at the end to cool off and unwind!
The event is in aid of Whitstable RNLI and it is hoped that each runner will help to raise money on top of the entrants fee. However, it is not obligatory.
It is open to all ages with previous entrants from 4 year olds through to 90 years old. This year it will be on Saturday 10th September. The walk/run starts from Whitstable Swimming Pool at 3.30-3.45pm respectively, out to Longrock and back followed by 16 lengths of the pool. The event is not timed as it is not a race.
The event is run by Active Life staff and RNLI volunteers along with voluntary support from off duty police and paramedic staff.
The cost of the event is £10 with any money raised going to the RNLI at Whitstable. Each participant will receive a goodie bag which has been donated by various local companies.
